Migrating Recurring Donors When Switching to Goodworld

Switching fundraising platforms doesn't have to mean losing your recurring donors. Goodworld supports two migration pathways depending on your current platform and payment gateway.

Option A: Stripe Gateway Migration

Best for: Organizations with 50 or more recurring donors currently processed through Stripe.

If your current platform (such as Givebutter or Fundraise Up) uses Stripe as its payment gateway, Goodworld can work directly with Stripe support to transfer your existing subscriptions to our Stripe account. This happens entirely behind the scenes — your donors are not contacted and do not need to take any action.

How it works: Goodworld opens a ticket with Stripe support on your behalf. Stripe facilitates the transfer of active subscriptions from your current account to ours, preserving each donor's amount, frequency, and billing date.

Pricing: This service is offered for $500–$900 and includes coordination, execution, and support throughout the migration process.

Volume minimum: For fewer than 50 recurring donors, the time and cost of a gateway migration typically isn't justified. In those cases, we recommend Option B instead.

What if my donors aren't on Stripe?

If your current platform uses a non-Stripe gateway (such as Blackbaud), a cross-gateway migration is still possible — but it involves a more complex, secure credential transfer protocol and may exceed $900 in services. Goodworld has successfully completed this type of migration before. Contact our team to discuss your specific situation.

Option B: Donor Re-engagement via Drip Email

Best for: Organizations coming from platforms that don't allow gateway portability (such as Classy), or those with fewer than 50 recurring donors.

When a payment credential transfer isn't possible or practical, Goodworld uses a re-engagement approach that consistently delivers strong conversion rates.

How it works:

  1. You provide Goodworld with your existing recurring plan details — donor name, donor email, gift amount, frequency, campaign, fund designation, and charge date (+ any other PII data you want attached to their contact profile).

  2. Goodworld helps you build and send a drip email campaign that invites donors to reconnect their payment method in the new system.

  3. Donors click through and re-enter their payment information directly. No sensitive financial credentials are transferred.

While this option does require donor action, it's a transparent, low-friction process — and it works well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my donors be interrupted or charged twice during the migration? No. For Option A, Stripe manages the transfer and billing continues uninterrupted. For Option B, new charges only begin once a donor reconnects their payment method.

Do I need to contact donors individually? Not in most cases. Option A requires no donor outreach at all. Option B uses a coordinated drip email campaign managed with Goodworld's support — no one-on-one outreach needed.

How long does migration take? Option A typically takes 1–3 weeks depending on Stripe's timeline. Option B varies based on how quickly donors respond to the email campaign.

What information do I need to provide? For Option B, you'll need to share each recurring plan's donor name, donor email, gift amount, frequency, and next charge date. Goodworld will guide you through the full data handoff process.
