Goodworld’s Rollover Gifts feature allows organizations to carry gifts and payroll pledges from one campaign into the next. Administrators can either:
Give donors the opportunity to renew or modify their previous pledge (Opt-in Rollover), or
Automatically renew eligible gifts on behalf of donors (Auto-Renew).
Rollover Gifts help simplify annual giving campaigns, improve donor retention, and reduce the effort required for returning donors to participate year after year.
Select a Source Campaign
Before enabling Rollover Gifts, choose a Source Campaign.
The source campaign determines which previous gifts or payroll pledges will be referenced when renewing donations in the current campaign.
To configure:
Open your campaign.
Navigate to Features.
Enable Rollover Gifts.
Search for and select the previous campaign to use as the source.
Only donations and pledges from the selected source campaign will be available for renewal.
Two ways to use Rollover Gifts
Rollover Gifts supports two distinct workflows.
Option 1: Opt-in Rollover
With Opt-in Rollover, donors are shown their previous pledge when they visit the new campaign.
They can choose to:
Renew their previous pledge
Modify last year’s pledge for the new campaign
Create an entirely new pledge
This gives donors full visibility into their previous giving while allowing them to make updates before submitting their pledge.
Note: Changes made during the rollover process only affect the donor’s pledge for the new campaign. The original pledge from the previous campaign is never modified.
Option 2: Auto-Renew
With Auto-Renew, administrators automatically renew eligible gifts or payroll pledges without requiring any donor action.
Auto-Renew can be configured separately for:
Recurring donations
Payroll pledges
Organizations often use Auto-Renew to ensure participation from donors who do not revisit the campaign before it closes.
Opt-in and Auto-Renew can be used together
These options are not mutually exclusive.
Many organizations:
Enable Opt-in Rollover so engaged donors can review and update their pledge.
Configure Auto-Renew so that donors who never return to the campaign are automatically renewed after a specified processing date.
This provides donors with flexibility while ensuring participation from those who do not actively revisit the campaign.
If neither option is enabled
Simply enabling the Rollover Gifts feature is not enough.
If:
Opt-in Rollover is disabled, and
No Auto-Renew settings are enabled
then the feature will not perform any rollover actions.
Organizations should always configure at least one rollover method.
Auto-Renewals Use Case
Auto-renewals require donors to take no action. Admins are simply carrying over a prior gift or gift plan to a new campaign. Auto-renew recurring donations will bring over one-time or recurring donations into a new campaign. Auto-renew payroll pledges will bring over a pledge that an employee has made and apply the same preferences and settings to the new campaign.
Donor Experience
When Opt-in Rollover is enabled, donors are presented with their previous pledge and several options.
They can choose to:
Renew Previous Pledge
Renew their previous pledge using the same designations and giving preferences.
Change Previous Pledge
Modify last year’s pledge for the current campaign.
For example, donors can:
Adjust gift amounts
Remove charities
Add new organizations
Update how their pledge is distributed
This does not modify the historical pledge from the previous campaign—it simply creates a revised version for the current campaign.
Create a New Pledge
Donors may also ignore their previous giving entirely and create a completely new pledge from scratch.
Renew Only vs. Nudge to Increase
Organizations can encourage donors to increase their previous pledge during the rollover process.
Instead of only offering a simple renewal, administrators may configure percentage-based increase options such as:
Increase by 5%
Increase by 10%
Increase by 15%
When a donor selects one of these options, the increase is applied proportionally across every designation included in their original pledge.
For example:
If a donor originally pledged $1,000 across five nonprofits and selects a 10% increase, the new pledge becomes $1,100, with the additional $100 distributed proportionally across the original designations.
Advanced Settings
Auto-Renew Processing Date
Administrators can choose when automatic renewals occur.
The selected processing date significantly impacts how campaign progress appears.
Auto-Renew at the beginning of a campaign
When Auto-Renew runs before donors begin interacting with the campaign:
Renewed pledges are immediately added to campaign totals.
Fundraising progress begins much closer to the campaign goal.
Organizations can use this as an early revenue forecast.
Auto-Renew near the end of a campaign
When Auto-Renew runs near the campaign close:
Campaign progress reflects real-time donor participation throughout the campaign.
Only donors who never returned to the campaign are automatically renewed at the end.
Fundraising totals receive a final increase after the rollover process completes.
Payment Methods that Override Auto-Renew
These settings prevent duplicate pledges.
If a donor already submits a new pledge using one of the selected payment methods before the Auto-Renew process runs, the platform will not automatically renew their previous pledge.
For example:
If Payroll is selected as an override method:
A donor visits the campaign.
They submit a new payroll pledge.
The Auto-Renew process later runs.
Because the donor already pledged through Payroll, the system skips Auto-Renew for that donor, preventing duplicate payroll pledges.
These override settings are an important safeguard when using Auto-Renew.
Respect Previous Pay Periods
Payroll campaigns often contain different pay schedules across organizations or departments.
When Respect Previous Pay Periods is enabled, renewed payroll pledges retain the same number of payroll deductions as the original pledge.
If disabled, donors may choose a different payroll schedule during renewal.
Most organizations should leave this setting enabled to maintain consistency between campaigns.
Auto-Renew Recurring Donations vs. Payroll Pledges
Auto-Renew settings can be configured independently for different gift types.
Recurring Donations
Automatically renew recurring donation schedules from the source campaign into the current campaign.
Payroll Pledges
Automatically recreate payroll pledges using the previous campaign’s payroll settings.
Organizations may enable one, both, or neither depending on how they manage annual campaigns.
What happens if a designation from the previous campaign is no longer active?
If a donor’s previous pledge includes a designation that is no longer active in the current campaign, the renewed pledge will continue referencing that designation.
If your organization would like to use a different workflow for inactive or retired designations, please contact the Goodworld team to discuss available options.
