Customizing the Thank You Step

Customize the way you thank your donors after a donation flow, event registration, ticket purchase of volunteer sign-up.

Written by Raagini Sarkar

The Thank You step is the final part of a supporter’s journey after they complete an action in Goodworld, such as making a donation, registering for an event, purchasing a ticket, or signing up for a volunteer opportunity.

While it can serve as a simple confirmation message, it can also be used more strategically to encourage supporters to share their participation, continue engaging with your organization, or move directly into another action.

This article explains how to customize the Thank You step, when to use sharing tools, and when it may make more sense to redirect supporters somewhere else.

What is the Thank You step?

The Thank You step appears after a supporter successfully completes an action.

It serves several purposes:

  • Confirms that the donation, registration, ticket purchase, or volunteer sign-up was completed successfully

  • Provides a clear sense of closure to the supporter

  • Gives your organization an opportunity to thank them

  • Encourages supporters to extend their impact by sharing with their network

  • Directs supporters toward another action, resource, or next step

Depending on your goals, you can either display a customized Thank You screen or redirect supporters to another page entirely.

Where to find Thank You settings

Thank You settings are available within the settings for:

  • Campaigns

  • Events

  • Volunteer Opportunities

Open the relevant Campaign, Event, or Volunteer Opportunity and navigate to the Thank You section.

From here, you can choose how the final step of the supporter journey should behave.

Choose your Thank You experience

There are two primary ways to configure the Thank You step:

Option 1: Display a customized Thank You screen

Use this option when you want supporters to remain within the Goodworld experience after completing their action.

You can customize the screen with your own messaging, imagery, sharing tools, and navigation options.

This is often the best choice for public-facing donation campaigns, events, and volunteer opportunities where you want to thank supporters and give them an opportunity to stay engaged.

Option 2: Redirect supporters to another page

You can also bypass the standard Thank You screen and automatically redirect supporters to a custom URL.

This is useful when completing the Goodworld action is only one step in a larger process.

For example, you may want to redirect someone to:

  • A background check or screening form after they register to volunteer

  • An external training or orientation page

  • A survey or feedback form

  • An interest or demographic information form

  • Another Goodworld campaign, event, or volunteer opportunity

  • A storytelling or impact page on your organization’s website

  • Another next step that is important to the supporter journey

For example, if someone registers for a fundraising walk, you might redirect them to a volunteer opportunity where they can also sign up to help at the event.

Similarly, after an employee submits a workplace giving pledge, you might redirect them to an optional survey where they can share information about their interests or engagement preferences.

Customize the Thank You screen

If you choose to display the standard Thank You screen, you can customize several elements.

Add a top image

Upload an image that appears toward the top of the Thank You screen.

This can be used to reinforce your organization’s branding, campaign imagery, or impact story.

The Thank You experience is optimized for mobile devices, so consider using imagery that remains clear and effective on smaller screens.

Customize the header

Use the header to clearly acknowledge that the supporter has completed their action.

For example:

Thank you for your support!

or

You’re all set!

A clear header helps reassure supporters that their donation or registration was successfully completed.

Add sub text

You can add additional text beneath the header to thank supporters or encourage them to take another step.

For example:

“Together, we’re making a difference.”

or:

“Share this campaign with your community to help grow your impact.”

Use this space to reinforce the purpose of the action they just completed and give them a clear next step if appropriate.

Show Share Options

The Show Share Options setting allows supporters to share the campaign, event, or opportunity with their own networks after completing their action.

Current sharing options include:

  • Facebook

  • X

  • Email

When a supporter selects one of these options, they are not being directed to your organization’s social media page.

Instead, the tool allows the supporter to share from their own account.

Facebook and X sharing

If a supporter selects Facebook or X, the relevant platform opens so they can create a post about the campaign or activity they just supported.

The goal is to make it easier for supporters to tell their own network why they participated and encourage others to get involved.

Email sharing

The Email share option opens the supporter’s default email application with a pre-filled message.

The supporter can then choose who they would like to send the message to.

This is a sharing tool and is not intended to send an email directly to your organization.

Customize the email share message

You can customize the content supporters see when they select the Email share option.

This includes:

  • Email subject

  • Email body

Consider writing a message that feels natural coming from a supporter rather than from your organization directly.

For example, the message might briefly explain that they supported your campaign and invite the recipient to learn more or participate.

Why encourage supporters to share?

Sharing can give supporters a simple way to extend their impact beyond their individual donation, registration, or sign-up.

Public fundraising benchmarks suggest that some donors are willing to take this additional step when the process is made easy.

For example, GoFundMe has previously reported that nearly 1 in 5 certified charity donors shared a fundraiser following their donation, while a more recent platform-wide report has placed sharing closer to 40%.

These benchmarks largely come from peer-to-peer and personal fundraising campaigns, which may naturally generate more social sharing than a direct donation made through a nonprofit’s website.

Your organization should not necessarily expect the same sharing rates.

However, these benchmarks demonstrate why giving supporters a simple opportunity to share can be a useful part of the post-donation experience.

Even when supporters do not share, the Thank You step still provides an important opportunity to acknowledge their contribution and close the experience on a positive note.

When should you use Share Options?

Sharing tools tend to work best when the action is public-facing and easy for supporters to talk about with their network.

For example, you may want to enable sharing for:

  • Public donation campaigns

  • Peer-to-peer fundraising campaigns

  • Community events

  • Public volunteer opportunities

  • Fundraising events where participants may want to encourage friends or family to join

In these situations, a Thank You message such as:

“Thank you for supporting our work. Share this campaign with your community to help grow your impact.”

can provide a natural invitation to continue engaging.

When might you turn Share Options off?

Not every supporter journey needs a social sharing component.

For example, workplace giving campaigns are often limited to employees within a specific organization.

In this context, employees may be less likely to publicly share information about their workplace pledge, and social sharing may not align with the intended experience.

Instead, you may choose to keep the Thank You screen simple by:

  • Confirming that the pledge was completed

  • Thanking the employee

  • Providing a link to their Goodworld profile

  • Directing them back into the platform

The best configuration depends on the purpose and audience of the campaign.

Additional Thank You screen options

Depending on your configuration, you may also have access to additional settings.

Show a dashboard or profile link

You can give supporters a direct link to their Goodworld profile or dashboard.

This can be helpful when you want supporters to continue engaging within the platform after completing their action.

Show a reset option

The reset option allows supporters to return to the beginning of the same form.

This may be helpful in cases where you want to make it easy for someone to complete another donation or submission.

Show a sign-out button

If supporters are signed into an account, you can provide a sign-out option at the end of the journey.

This may be particularly useful for shared devices or workplace environments.

Add a bottom image

You can upload an additional image that appears toward the bottom of the Thank You screen.

This can be used as a visual anchor or to reinforce branding and campaign messaging.

Choosing the right Thank You strategy

The best Thank You experience depends on what you want the supporter to do next.

Public donation campaign

Consider:

  • A clear Thank You message

  • Impact-focused supporting text

  • Share Options enabled

  • A customized email share message

This gives supporters closure while also making it easy to encourage others to participate.

Workplace giving campaign

Consider:

  • A simple confirmation message

  • Share Options disabled

  • A profile or dashboard link

This keeps the experience focused on confirming the employee’s pledge and continuing their journey within the platform.

Volunteer opportunity

Consider:

  • A Thank You screen with next-step instructions

or:

  • A redirect to a background check, training module, waiver, or qualification form

Event registration

Consider:

  • A confirmation message with sharing enabled

or:

  • A redirect to a related action, such as volunteer registration, fundraising, or another event page

Best practices

When configuring your Thank You step, keep the following recommendations in mind:

  • Always clearly confirm that the supporter’s action was completed successfully.

  • Keep the primary Thank You message short and easy to understand.

  • Use supporting text to explain why the supporter’s action matters.

  • Only enable sharing when it makes sense for the audience and type of campaign.

  • When encouraging sharing, explain why the supporter may want to share rather than simply displaying social icons without context.

  • Customize email sharing language so the message sounds natural coming from a supporter.

  • Use redirects when there is a clear, important next step that should happen immediately after completion.

  • Avoid sending supporters to another page without a clear reason or next action.

  • Think of the Thank You step as part of the overall supporter journey rather than simply a confirmation screen.

A thoughtful Thank You experience can help supporters leave with a clear sense of completion while also creating an opportunity to deepen their engagement with your organization.
